In Years 1 and 2, we build upon the skills of independent learning and problem solving, fostered in our Nursery and Reception classes. We encourage the children to embrace a variety of creative challenges, supporting development in collaboration and perseverance. We push the boundaries beyond a mere acquisition of knowledge and develop further the skills of investigation and enquiry.
Learning in Key Stage 1 becomes more formal and structured. We follow the National Curriculum, however, it is enhanced and enriched, providing every pupil the opportunities to reach their potential, to be inspired and enthused. We promote high levels of achievement and effort and celebrate children’s successes, as they acquire key skills. Staff invest time in acquainting the children as individuals with unique interests, aptitudes and areas for ongoing development. Learning is therefore carefully planned, ensuring the ever-changing needs of all are continually met.
Alongside class-based teaching, children in Year 1 and 2 benefit from specialist teachers for sport, music and French with the addition of drama and art in Year 2. Plays, concerts and leading assemblies enrich their experience further. Children continue to enjoy educational visits and on-site workshops, relishing the opportunities to contextualise and make connections with their classroom learning. They benefit from a strong and diverse programme of extra-curricular activities in a secure and stimulating environment.
Children leave the Pre-Prep socially, emotionally and academically equipped for the challenges of life in our Prep department.
All children potentially joining the school in either Year 1 or Year 2 will spend time in the classroom and will also complete assessments in both English and mathematics with our Head of Pre-Prep. This ensures we can be certain that your child will flourish and be happy at St Nicholas Preparatory School.
