Reception is a vibrant, happy and stimulating environment, where children are encouraged to take risks, to challenge themselves and to become critical thinkers. We promote independence, nurture self-awareness, emotional intelligence, cooperation and care for others.
The Reception curriculum is broad, balanced and creative and encompasses the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Alongside a more structured programme for Literacy and mathematics, varied thematic based units with carefully planned meaningful and challenging activities, ensure opportunities to discover and investigate. We ensure an appreciation of the natural world where we take the curriculum outside the classroom, either in our beautiful garden or to Hyde Park.
The children continue to benefit from specialist teaching in music, PE, dance and French. They participate in workshops and relish excursions embracing the rich and unrivalled resources within our local community, thus enhancing their understanding of the world.
Learning, curriculum wide is adapted to suit individual children’s needs and interests so that they are confident and highly motivated. High expectations ensure progress in children’s academic, physical, social and emotional development. Close links with parents are encouraged, including contributions to the children’s online journals and to our ‘Open Classroom’, where children enjoy sharing their learning.
Reception children move into Year 1 as independent and happy learners, ready to embrace the rigour of Key Stage 1, with a strong learning ethic, enthusiasm and self-assurance.
All children potentially joining our Reception classes will spend time with the Head of Pre-Prep. This session generally takes place in the January before entry. This session is informal, and its purpose is to ensure your child will thrive at St Nicholas in Reception and beyond.
