Fun Run, Visits and Road Safety

30 September 2011

Friends Charity Fun Run

Many congratulations to all the Friends committee and helpers for organising the splendidly successful fun run round the garden. Our thanks too to the sports and support staff who started their days even earlier than early to make sure everyone could start running at 8 am. Congratulations to all of the children, parents and carers who took part. A total of 4259 laps were run by 108 people. Much fun was had by all and there was a special sunny St Nicholas buzz. We look forward so much to seeing how much we have raised through sponsorship. Make sure you collect the money and bring it in Monday morning.

Visit of Bob Green, Education Officer, Cognita

We were delighted to welcome Bob Green, our new Education Officer from Cognita. He spent the afternoon here, met many of the children and staff, toured the school and was impressed by the happy, busy atmosphere. Bob has 24 years as a primary head under his belt and several years of working as an Inspector for Ofsted.
I feel very fortunate that we will be able to draw from him many useful insights into the way to run a successful school and he is keen to be involved in helping us to deliver some of our School Improvement Objectives. I look forward to a long and productive working relationship with Bob and thank him for his time and wise advice on Thursday.

Road safety

The action group set up by parents to create safer walking routes to school had a successful site meeting in the second week of the summer holiday attended by representatives of Transport for London, Westminster county council, the contractors working on the upgrade to Exhibition Road, Greg Warwick from Cognita and representatives from the Albert Hall. At that meeting we set out our concerns about the dangerous crossroads at the lights at the top of Exhibition road and impressed upon all that a pedestrian phase is needed in both directions. We also believe there is a need for pedestrian crossings in both slip roads beside the Albert Hall to delineate where people have priority over vehicles. We know that decisions regarding these ideas are made in committees we are not on but we felt that as a result of the meeting there was a shift in thinking by those with influence and we are hopeful that we will get, in the first instance, the pedestrian phase on the lights. I am grateful to the parent action group for their participation and perspective.
Until the lights are installed we have taken up Westminster's offer of training for Evert, our caretaker, who is now a fully fledged school crossing patrol officer complete with luminous uniform and folding lollipop! Evert is working on the crossing every morning from 8.30 to 9.00 am. As a legacy we will be able to use him to ensure safer passage to the park.
Westminster is also providing Peter Wilson to run some road safety workshops with all ages and our assembly on Road Safety Day which is on Monday 10th October.
